And here’s the news....and the real facts on the Myer deal

As some of you may have noticed there has been a real beat up by certain candidates over the Myer figures.  So if you want to read some of the information that influenced the minds of Aldermen to get Myer to rebuild, go to: http://www.hobartcity.com.au/Publications/Media_Releases and click on the City of Hobart acted to save CBD jobs and rates - 30 September 2014City of Hobart acted to save CBD jobs and rates - 30 September 2014 link.

Okay, it’s an official media release, but I suggest you wade through down to the SGS Executive Summary to the final page and have a look at the financial costs to Hobart’s future.

And no, Aldi and David Jones or similar retail expressed no interest at the time or since in replacing Myer.  In the budget of running a city like Hobart, losing Myer and then getting any retail recovery would be very difficult.  Did I make the right decision at the time? Yes.  Would I make the same decision today?  A great deal has changed in the retail environment since then (see my post on Myer’s loyalty).  We’re all wise after the event.
